children of light

These days, many feel like we are entering the Dark Ages. This is particularly so among the young, who project forward half a century and worry about a future world that seems to be heading into dark places even now.  They look around for some light to guide the way, but the darkness seems to have overcome it.

Such was the case when the young disciples of Jesus were led into a dark place by their Teacher and Lord.  He said to them, You are going to have The Light just a little while longer.  Walk while you have The Light, before darkness overtakes you.  And then, echoing the experience of many, then and now, He added Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going (John 12:35). Then and now, leading institutions, organizations, and leaders have lost their way in the gathering gloom.  And Jesus leads His followers into that dark place.

His command to His disciples then remains the way for us today as it was for those who went through the tribulation of Jesus' arrest, trial, and death: Walk while you have The Light...Believe in The Light while you have The Light (John 12:35-36).  The True Light that gives light to everyone has come into the world...The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:9,5).  Walk it out, carrying The inextinguishable Light we have been given in Christ.

There will always be periods of deep darkness, and Jesus leads us into them so that His Light will shine brighter for us and for those to whom we will bring His Light. The Light of Christ triumphs over the darkness precisely in the darkness, however dim its victory may seem at the time.  Such was the case on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.  But The Resurrection Light still shines, and we are to walk in that Light, and believe in that Light, so that [we] may become children of Light (John 12:36), born out of darkness, shining in the darkness, for all to see.
