in accordance with the scriptures

In the online services of Morning Prayer, which I lead weekdays, we recite The Apostles' Creed.  The historic creeds - The Apostles, the Nicene, and the Athanasian - gather and focus the core teaching of The Scriptures, summarizing the biblical truths that are the ground for a saving faith in the Triune God.  I'm grateful to recite the Apostles' Creed, the earliest, dating from the second century, which defines the basic faith of the first apostles and their disciples, including me.  I'm reminded that, as I go deeper and broader in The Faith of Jesus and His Church, I should never stray from the simple statement of The Truth in Jesus.

As one of our prayers states, "we have erred and strayed from [God's] Ways like lost sheep".  This is seen in the subsequent creedal statements of the church.  Each of them is longer than the original Apostles' Creed, further clarifying the core faith in response to errant and straying renditions put forth by heterodox teachers in subsequent centuries.  The Nicene Creed combats teaching which asserts either that Jesus is God, or is human, but not both in one Person.  The Athanasian Creed defines the Triune Nature of God as opposed to those who wished to assert only His Oneness.

As regards the necessary corrections to my faith, a particular phrase in the Nicene Creed has caught my attention.  In reasserting the Apostles' Creed teaching that Jesus rose from the dead, the Nicene adds "in accordance with The Scriptures".  It states clearly not only that Jesus' Resurrection was a fulfillment of key Old Testament prophecies, but also that The Word of God is The Source of our knowing anything about God.  For though today I may feel and trust that Jesus lives, tomorrow I may think and believe differently.  Thankfully, all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

May you and I continue to reference that Fountain of Truth, allowing it to teach, rebuke, correct, and train us together in The Righteousness which is in Christ alone. so that we can worthily serve Him and those in the world He came, died, and rose to save.
