merely human concerns

7-7-26 merely human concerns

I never cease to be astonished that The God of the Universe is concerned about me, and you too.  He Who created and sustains all things, from the macro reaches of the cosmos and beyond to the micro spaces of the particular and more, is aware of us and our merely human concerns.

Jesus was constantly attending to such concerns, from helping some fishermen get a catch, to healing a sick mother-in-law, to encouraging a rejected woman at a well, to making it possible for sinners like you and me to receive life abundant and eternal.  He demonstrates that our concerns are His, and, therefore, aren't merely human concerns after all.  I've heard people say that they don't want to bother God with their concerns, preferring to ask Him to address greater needs.  A noble thought, but God wishes us to bring to Him all our needs, from the smallest to the greatest, so that He can permeate our lives, from the minute to the gargantuan: in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6)

And yet...

He does rebuke Peter for rebuking Him when He spoke of His suffering and death:  You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns (Mark 8:33).  There are times when we approach God with a merely human agenda, our personal will, rebuking Him for not doing things our way.  This will not fly with a God Who is Sovereign, Whose Will supersedes ours.  So perhaps, as we approach God's Throne of Grace with confidence in bringing our merely human concerns, let's take note that we do so not as masters of our destiny, but rather as mere recipients of His Mercy and Grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).  And what more can we need than that?
